The Creative Homeschoolers Take the Stage
Last week, we got invited by Mindplay Studio to teach an acting & Improv workshop to two different age groups of homeschooled students.
The first group consisted of ten students ranging from ages 3-6. When they first arrived, many of them seemed shy and a bit unsure of themselves. However, after some fun warmup games like yes let’s, and freeze they really came out of their shells!
By the end of our sessions, their creativity and enthusiasm were infectious.
The second group was teenagers aged 8 to 14. As you can imagine, they were a bit more self-conscious at first. Breaking through that teenage awkwardness and getting them engaged took some work. But once I did, they turned out to be more focused and had the most fun learning to use their emotions, and pushing their imagination to play the problem-solution game & yes let’s.
We spent a lot of time with both groups doing improv games that got them moving, making bold character choices, and being confortable in front of others. It was so rewarding to see both groups of homeschooled students gain more confidence and collaborative skills through the acting exercises. They supported each other, took creative risks, and had a blast doing it.
We have no doubt there are some future performers in the making among these wonderful homeschoolers! If you have kids interested in acting, we can’t recommend getting them into an class or camp enough. It’s an amazing creative outlet and confidence booster.
